Born on September 6, 1931, in Tokyo, Japan. Katsui’s life began at the start of WWII. When he was thirteen, his family’s hometown in Tokyo was burned down during one of the first Tokyo airstrikes in 1944. After a year of being a child evacuee, he came back to the ruins of Tokyo and grew up in the midst of clashing western and Japanese values. Due to the large generation gap, a result of the war, Katsui’s generation was pressured to pave the way to a new start.
